In brief

A practice, not a system to master.

The ten attitudes are not a sequence of steps. Each offers a different way of meeting experience—with greater curiosity, patience, trust, or care.

The book develops the framework introduced on this site: stimulus, awareness, attitude, and response. It invites the reader to recognise the pause in which choice becomes possible.

It is for readers discovering mindfulness and for practitioners who want to bring these attitudes into the ordinary situations of life.

Origin

A matrix shaped by long practice.

The artwork at the heart of the cover

The Matrix is rooted in the mindfulness practice Pierre began in Australia in 1981, and later in his training and experience as an MBSR instructor. It organises that learning around one practical space: the interval between stimulus and response.

“We do not always choose what arrives. But we can learn how to meet it.”

At the heart of the book

The ten attitudes

  1. 01Beginner’s mind
  2. 02Non-judging
  3. 03Letting go
  4. 04Non-striving
  5. 05Acceptance
  6. 06Patience
  7. 07Trust
  8. 08Kindness
  9. 09Gratitude
  10. 10Generosity
Why ten?

MBSR traditionally presents nine attitudinal foundations. The Matrix carries that foundation forward by making kindness explicit—not as decoration, but as the quality that lets us face a mistake or difficulty honestly without adding humiliation.

Explore the roots of the attitudes

A reading path

From reflex to considered response.

The Matrix can be approached as a four-part movement rather than a rigid method.

  1. 01Recognise the stimulus

Notice what has happened before the inner story occupies the whole field.

  2. 02Open awareness

Feel the body, emotion, and automatic impulse without having to act immediately.

  3. 03Choose an attitude

Invite patience, non-judging, trust, or whichever attitude this moment needs.

  4. 04Allow the response

Respond from a little more space rather than from impulse alone.

An everyday example

A difficult message arrives.

You read unexpected criticism. Your jaw tightens and a defensive reply is already taking shape.

Awareness

Notice the heat, tension, and urge to answer immediately.

Attitude

Invite non-judging to separate the facts from the story the mind is adding.

Response

Wait, read again, and respond to what was actually said rather than to the first sting.
